博尔特出身穷苦人家。在牙买加，穷苦人脱离贫穷的唯一途径就是练短跑，这个国家盛产短跑冠军。然而当父亲满怀希望地把小博尔特送到体校时。教练把头摇得像拨浪鼓：“这孩子身体不行，不适合练短跑！”“您看，他才十几岁，就有一米九多，这还不行？”父亲茫然。教练笑了：“个高则重心高，起跑乏力。跑起来还不稳当；再说，他四肢太长，摆动频率就低，身体协调性也差，不易出成绩呀；况且，这年龄也稍大了些，不如改练排球或篮球吧。”最终，经不住父子俩哀求，好心的教练勉强答应留下试试。
